focus

My photographic perspective presents minimally processed, natural, subject-oriented images that challenge the current idealization of movement-focused nature photographs. I have chosen to ignore many a skittish bird or a deer wandering near a well-traveled trail, opting not to disturb the enjoyable, sacred environment.  Although I especially enjoy overcast days, when I can capture work against a naturally occurring white background, I photograph as I see, rather than searching for species. My images focus on still subjects, familiar to those immersed in the natural world. Specific compositions are unlikely to be reproduced exactly; still, I aim to convey the importance of nature by creating connections to these shared moments. Emanating stillness, highlighting natural design, capturing the everyday, these visible moments in nature ideally inspire connection and improved conservation, in the desire to protect the local natural beauty surrounding us.

My images examine the breadth of beauty within hyper-local nature. Having grown up and lived in the Sonoma Valley my whole life, using a camera as a means of communication I aim to foster focus on what many see as everyday. My sentiment contradicts the stereotype that nature photographers focus only on spectacularly vibrant, detailed, intricate, endangered, rare, or even species perceived as “difficult to capture.” I apply my artistic process to every species I encounter, whether a garden weed or a Bald Eagle, not just those deemed deserving.

Although I believe the subject is of utmost importance in composing natural images, that doesn’t discount the role that composition, handling of lighting, and focus play in image creation. In many cases, to best reproduce what is seen with my naked eye requires more technical and situational understanding than is often considered. Even without this knowledge, photography can be art, but every step taken to understand more about the craft furthers the sentiment that Photography is a genuine art form.
